Nostalgia

Recently Son #1's show and tell topic was 'When I was a baby'. As we flicked through the photos he wanted to print to show his class, I couldn't help but feel a little nostalgic. So cute. So squidgy. Perhaps heightening my nostalgia was a phone call the previous day from a very good friend who shared that her family was to grow once more. I couldn't be happier for her! But that didn't stop this mummy from feeling a little green-eyed upon hearing such exciting news. A brand-new, unique person, created for a purpose will soon be entering the world! How could you not want one of those?

And then Son #2 caught a cold. Nothing terrible, but enough to disturb his sleep (and therefore mine). As I rocked him throughout the night for a few nights, sleep deprivation replaced nostalgia. After only a few short years, it has become easy to forget the sleepless nights, difficult feeds and screams - oh the screams - of an unsettled baby that filled the space from one cute and squidgy photo opportunity to another.

YES! If I had the chance to do it all again, I would! In a heartbeat! But now, as our family circle is complete, I can look back on my children's babyhood's with nostalgia - yes, but mainly contentment. Though I would never have believed it, my children (and their parents) do sleep through most nights now. All three children have been fed and watered everyday of their lives. They have grown, maybe not on the correct percentile curve, but grown they have. They crawled when they were ready and not because their parents lined muffins in front of them for encouragement because everyone else thought they'd be mobile by now, and not a moment before. At the right time, they walked. And talked. And now, I have the photos to prove it.

So dear friend, and all those expecting beautiful bundles of perfection, you have my sincere congratulations! Enjoy! Take lots of photos, for one day soon, though you may not believe it now, you too will be on the other side feeling a little better rested, a little nostalgic and perhaps, just perhaps, feeling ready to do it all again. And then your child will get a cold.

Valentine's Day

I had planned to give the kids a little something for Valentine's Day, but the day came and went before I was able to give them my gift. I had made a printable and bought the necessary accompanying items, but failed to make sure there was ink in the printer :( Lesson learned!

The kids were just as thrilled however, when I presented them with their gift on Friday night (our most special meal together each week). Last year for our anniversary, I made my hubby an 'I love you because....' wall hanging inspired by this pin.

Writing a regular 'I love you' message has been a lovely addition to our relationship, and a much envied one by our children. So for Valentine's Day this year I made our kids their own 'You are special because....' signs. They have been hung together in the well trafficked hall way now dubbed 'The Wall of Praise'.

It has been so lovely not only writing each child messages, but seeing the messages they have written for each other!

I hope you had a great Valentine's Day!

Happy 6th Birthday!

Recently our biggest boy turned 6. What a day! I always begin with the intention of making birthday celebrations in our house special but small. As the day draws closer and I list all I have planned for the birthday person in question, my husband smiles and rolls his eyes.

This year Son #1 had a school party prior to his birthday day (his best friend was to be away on THE day so we held it a few days earlier), a birthday lunch with his cousins and good friends, and a dinner party with other family members. And to end the day, some out-of-town friends came to stay. Result: one very happy and tired 6 year old!

As for presents, I made Son #1 a door hanging (ok, so I may have finished early hours birthday morning but I don't think he noticed the smell of paint). He is quite the comedian and so I thought a knock-knock joke for his bedroom door would go down a treat. I was right! He loved it!

How do you celebrate birthdays in your house?

Starting

I have been loitering around blog sites for a while now, being educated and inspired in so many ways, and have been promising myself I will begin one of my own.....one day. That day is today! I begin this blog, not because I think my contribution will be outstanding, but because I hope it will help me stay focused in my motherhood journey.

So this is me......starting.
